Qualcomm launched its first 5nm chipset for Windows on ARM devices, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, almost one year ago. The company is now working on the next generation of the chipset. While there are no official details about the coming processor, the leaks about the chipset revealed. According to the leaks, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will be more powerful than its predecessor thanks to the improved features. Here are the details about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 specs.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 comes as “ORYON”
According to the rumors, the manufacturer will launch the next-gen chipset based on Nuvia’s Phoenix design and the chipset will have the “Oryon” marketing name. The new chipset will be a 12-core chip, with 8 performance (3.4GHz), and 4 efficiency (2.5GHz) cores. Additionally, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will come with 12MB of shared L2 cache for each block of 4 cores, plus 8MB of L3 cache, 12MB of system-level cache, and an extra 4MB for graphics.
The new chipset will have support for up to 64GB of LPDDR5X RAM in an 8-channel configuration running at 4.2GHz. In terms of GPU, the chipset will feature the Adreno 740 built-in, like the 8 Gen 2. However, the 8cx Gen 4 will support an external GPU thanks to the 8 lanes of PCIe 4.0. In addition, there will be an extra 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes for NVMe drives.
On the connectivity side, the company launches the next-gen Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 chipset with 2 lanes UFS 4.0 storage (up to 1TB), PCIe 3.0 lanes, two USB 3 10Gbps ports, and three USB 4 (Thunderbolt 4) ports with DisplayPort 1.4a. Thanks to this function, the chipset will support a triple monitor setup, 5K+4K+4K.
According to the expectations, the chipset will support video decoding up to 4K/120fps and encoding up to 4K/60fps in different codecs, such as AV1. While the company has not announced the launch date yet, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 is expected to be available in 2024 and power Windows laptops and tablets. The manufacturer will give more details about the upcoming chipset later this year.
