Sony has turned a corner with this strategy

Sony has found great success porting its PlayStation exclusives to the PC platform. According to a new report, PC versions of PlayStation titles, including PS5 games, have generated billions of dollars in revenue for the company.

Recent data released by Alinea Analytics shows that Sony’s gross revenue from Steam alone has exceeded $1.5 billion. The analytics firm noted that PC gamers are particularly keen on multiplayer games.

The company estimates that Valve receives a share of these sales ranging from 20% to 30%, with this percentage decreasing as sales volume increases. After all fees, Sony is estimated to have netted approximately $1.2 billion in revenue, with Valve earning more than $350 million in the process.

The game that led the way in this commercial success was Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2, the best-selling PlayStation game on the PC platform, has sold more than 12.7 million copies. Players have spent an average of over 100 hours on the game, and over 200,000 people play it daily.

Horizon Zero Dawn comes in second on the list, selling 4.5 million units. God of War comes in third with 4.2 million units. These games are followed by Days Gone, which has sold 3.4 million copies, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, with 2.7 million units.

Sony has committed to releasing its live service games simultaneously on consoles and PC, but it doesn’t have a definitive timeline for other PlayStation games. The company’s prominent first-party PS5 games are waiting at least a year after their console release to come to PC.

PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst explained this approach as an effort to protect the PlayStation console ecosystem. “We’re taking a more strategic approach to our single-player, story-driven games, which form the core of PlayStation Studios,” he said.
