Spotify has started to take steps in the online course field, where competition is quite intense. With the video-based courses launched today, Spotify is experimenting with online learning. Let’s take a look at the details together.
Spotify will now have courses
Currently only available in the UK, Spotify’s video courses are the result of collaborations with educational platforms such as Skillshare, BBC Maestro, PLAYvirtuoso and Thinkific. The courses are offered in four main categories, which Spotify calls “making music, being creative, learning on the job and healthy living”.
While most of platforms’ courses are music-related, there are also courses in areas such as music recording and production, songwriting, DJing and radio broadcasting. There are also courses that focus on specific genres of music such as rap, grime, garage, drum and bass, house and techno.
However, the platform also offers courses in entrepreneurship, business, cooking, money management, dance, fitness, mental health, video production, and subjects ranging from watercolor painting to photography and graphic design.
Premium subscribers and free Spotify users can get two lessons per course for free, but the remaining lessons must be purchased. This is a similar model to Spotify’s audiobook system, where premium users get free monthly listening hours.
The move follows Spotify’s investments in podcasts and audiobooks, and shows that the company faces serious competition in the online learning space. However, Spotify’s success in this space could help it stand out by offering its users a broader learning experience.
