Spotify has begun using face scanning

Ana sayfa / News

Spotify has implemented AI-powered facial scanning technology in its age verification process for users in the UK. The company took this step to comply with the country’s newly enacted Online Safety Act. The new system involves estimating the age of users who want to access age-restricted content based on a photograph.

The verification process is being conducted in partnership with Yoti, a UK-based technology company that has previously worked with platforms like Instagram. Users’ uploaded facial photos are processed to estimate their age. If the estimate is deemed insufficient or suspicious, users are given the option to manually verify with an ID document.

The primary goal of the new system is to specifically prevent users under the age of 13 from accessing the platform. According to a statement from Spotify, accounts found to be under the age limit will first be disabled and then permanently deleted. Furthermore, age-specific filters will also restrict songs, podcasts, and other content.

Spotify emphasizes transparency regarding the security of user data. It’s stated that Yoti’s technology only works to estimate age, uploaded photos are not stored for identification purposes, and the system focuses on not processing personal data.

The UK’s Online Safety Act obliges all digital platforms to more effectively protect underage users. The law requires technology companies to implement stricter measures to prevent access to age-inappropriate content. Spotify is one of the last major digital platforms to implement age verification systems.

Similar steps have been taken previously by Reddit, Bluesky, Microsoft/Xbox, and some adult content providers. While the practice is currently limited to the UK, the companies are expected to expand such verification systems to other markets. Age verification practices for digital service providers have become a growing global trend.
