Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet network, has surpassed 4 million subscribers, marking a major achievement. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell pointed to this important milestone in a statement in Texas on Tuesday. The company has further accelerated its growth rate, gaining one million new subscribers since May 2023 alone.
Starlink reaches 4 million subscribers!
Launched with beta service in 2020, Starlink continued to grow rapidly after passing 1 million subscribers in December 2022. This milestone was rapidly approached by reaching 2 million subscribers in September 2023 and 3 million subscribers in May 2023.
Starlink’s services provide Internet connectivity to individual users and large corporate customers such as airlines and cruise lines in more than 100 countries around the world. Starlink currently operates approximately 6,000 satellites.
Starlink’s growth is also reflected in the revenue generated from the service. By the end of 2023, it is expected to generate $6.6 billion in revenue. This figure was only $ 1.4 billion two years ago. The company plans to use this revenue growth to finance the development of Starship, Elon Musk’s grand vision of a reusable rocket. With the launch of Starship, Starlink will be able to launch more satellites more quickly.
Starlink has strengthened its position as a leader in space internet, growing by taking market share from legacy satellite service providers such as Viasat and SES. While these companies, which are located in high geostationary orbit, show slower growth, Starlink’s low-orbit satellites offer faster and uninterrupted internet service to its users. However, rival projects such as Amazon’s Kuiper Project are also under development. However, they have not yet offered commercial services.
Starship’s full capacity will help Starlink expand its network by putting more satellites into orbit. This will increase SpaceX’s capacity to serve more users by providing broadband internet from space.
