SpaceX is preparing to make Starlink satellite internet service available in space. Starlink internet will be available on Vast Haven-1, the first commercial space station planned to be crewed in the coming period.
Starlink to provide internet to commercial space station
In a statement made by Vast, Haven-1, which is planned to be launched in 2025, will support the Starlink network. It will use high-speed laser beams for broadband data transmission between satellites and users.
The Haven-1 space station will be equipped with SpaceX’s “laser link” technology, which will provide users with WiFi access. SpaceX stated that it will offer a high enough internet connection for activities such as video broadcasting and scientific experiments.
Starlink’s laser link offers data transmission speeds of up to 100 Gbps. This means it is on par with fiber optic speeds on Earth. According to Vast CEO Max Haot, Haven-1 will offer low latency connectivity in space, unlike other stations such as the ISS, when it starts receiving customers in 2025.
The partnership also represents a first for Starlink, which has so far offered laser links on Earth. SpaceX has expressed interest in offering laser links for other spacecraft.
He said this agreement with the company opens the door for further cooperation, including equipping Vast space stations with Starlink. As private space stations become commercialized, the need for high-speed internet in space will become inevitable.
