USA is on the agenda with the TikTok ban in government institutions
The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University filed a lawsuit in July, arguing that the Texas state government’s TikTok ban “prevents or severely impedes faculty from conducting TikTok-related research.” U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman dismissed the case, saying the Texas restriction was motivated by data protection concerns.
Making a statement on the subject, Pitman said, “Public university faculty members and all public employees are free to use TikTok on their personal devices (as long as such devices are not used to access government networks).”
TikTok sued Montana in May to block the US state ban on various grounds, arguing that it violated the company and users’ First Amendment rights to free speech. More than 30 states and US federal agencies, including the White House, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and State Department, have banned TikTok from government devices.
The TikTok ban on federal devices mandated by Congress in December 2022 is deemed invalid if there are national security and security research activities. However, TikTok, which has more than 150 million users in the US, denies improperly using US data.
Many countries, especially Turkey and the USA, have expressed concerns about TikTok’s closeness to the Chinese government and its retention of user data around the world. It is not yet known whether TikTok will be banned in government institutions in our country.
