There was an important change in the game world. Valve has officially ended support for Windows 7 and 8 operating systems for its popular platform Steam. This update was an expected development after Microsoft long ago discontinued official support for these operating systems.
Steam will not work on Windows 7 and Windows 8
Valve has ended Steam’s support for Windows 7 and 8. With the latest Steam update released by the company, compatibility with older Windows systems has ended. This decision actually reflects Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 7 in 2020 and Windows 8 in 2016.
The latest Steam hardware report shows that the user base of older Windows versions is declining. Only 0.28 per cent of Steam users were running Windows 7, while a smaller 0.08 per cent were running Windows 8 and 8.1.
With this change, Steam now officially supports only Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux and macOS. The rise of Windows 11 as the most popular Steam operating system among players has revealed the development of the platform.
There are also alternative options for those who do not want to switch to new Windows versions. Valve’s own console, Steam Deck, runs the company’s Linux-based SteamOS operating system. Accordingly, it allows users to access Steam libraries.
