Stellantis IBIS battery prototype brings real-world gains

Stellantis has taken a sharp turn in EV battery design. The new Stellantis IBIS battery, short for Intelligent Battery Integrated System, is now in public road testing and aims to fix several bottlenecks at once. Lighter, simpler, and smarter, this prototype blends the inverter and battery into one compact module.

By ditching the traditional layout, the Stellantis IBIS battery drops around 88 pounds and saves up to 17 liters of space. This makes room for other components or just more interior comfort.

Even better, charging time for AC drops by 15%, and total energy losses are cut by 10%. Stellantis claims this new setup pushes output up to 172 kW without increasing battery size. That’s a 15% jump over what typical packs deliver today.

Conventional batteries store direct current and need extra hardware like inverters and onboard chargers to work with AC systems. Tesla, Volkswagen, and others still follow that route. But the Stellantis IBIS battery skips all that, pushing AC power directly out of the pack.

That means fewer parts, faster installs, and fewer things to maintain down the road.

The project behind the Stellantis IBIS battery isn’t a solo act. Stellantis worked with Saft (a TotalEnergies company) for over six years. Researchers from CNRS, the Sorbonne, Paris-Saclay, and the Lafayette Institute round out the 25-person core team.

Production is on the roadmap for 2029 or 2030. If it holds up under testing, this tech won’t just evolve the EV, it might simplify it entirely.
