Sudan’s ongoing civil war has brought Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink satellite system into the spotlight. It has been revealed that some militias in Sudan are using these satellites to access the internet.
Sudanese militias are using the Starlink system!
It is alleged that Sudanese militias have been using Starlink satellites to connect to the internet since August. Some images and recent posts by the militias confirm these claims. Additionally, it has been uncovered that a Sudanese merchant named Hassan Abdul Alaal has been providing Starlink-supported internet service for a fee of $2 per hour. However, neither the Starlink management nor Sudanese authorities have made any statements regarding the matter.
In Sudan, the civil war that began in April 2023 claimed the lives of 12,000 people and forced 9 million others to flee to other countries. Both the Sudanese government and militias have been accused of committing war crimes. If these allegations are true, SpaceX, which deployed the Starlink satellite systems, and consequently Elon Musk, could face significant challenges. It was also previously alleged that these satellites were being used by Russia against Ukraine.
