Switch Joy-Con-style Xbox controller may be introduced
The recently published patent, filed in late 2021, shows a controller that would combine Xbox and mobile gaming. Microsoft also discusses an adjustable grip mechanism that can be attached to devices of different thicknesses. It should be noted that it differs from Joy-Con with this design.
The drawings in the patent show that the controllers could be separated and used with a device like the PlayStation Portable. Microsoft also emphasized that they can be attached to smartphones both vertically and horizontally.
We know that Microsoft has been looking to expand Xbox and cloud gaming recently. The company may be aiming to bring the Xbox experience to smartphones with these controllers. shows that it is exploring ways to make cloud gaming even more accessible on the go.
The Joy-Con-like detachable controller makes it possible to play Xbox games on any device. While the patent is design-oriented, it doesn’t describe the technology underneath the device. So it’s unclear whether it would work with a USB Type-C cable or a Bluetooth connection.
It should be noted that Microsoft has actually been interested in Joy-Con style controllers since 2019. However, let us remind you that the company has hundreds of patents in this context and none of them have turned into real products.
