Sport optics manufacturer Swarovski Optik has integrated the intelligence of the Merlin Bird ID app into a high-quality binocular, launching AX Visio which can identify birds and other creatures with a single button.

Stefan Schwarz, CEO of the Austrian company, states, “AX Visio is not just a flagship project demonstrating Swarovski Optik’s technological leadership in the sports optics market, but also marks the beginning of a new technological era for us.

Following a five-year R&D process, the AX Visio 10×32 binoculars combine high-precision analog optics with an object recognition system supported by a neural processor unit and an integrated 13-megapixel camera.

The user manually focuses on the target creature and selects it using buttons on the right, consulting the Merlin Bird ID or Mammal ID database. The system identifies over 9,000 birds and other wildlife, displaying the results on screen, and boasts a viewing range of approximately 1000 meters.

Other settings can activate the camera, use the compass, or mark points of interest. The binoculars operate via Bluetooth with the company’s Outdoor app, where images and videos can be stored or shared with friends.

Additionally, the system offers a future-proof structure for updates and potentially allows third-party developers to create new digital functions. The design was realized by renowned Australian designer Marc Newson.

The AX Visio smart binoculars, showcased at CES, are now available for $4,799. The promotional video for AX Visio can be found below.
