Durov, who had maintained silence during his detention, has now spoken out, indicating significant changes. He stated that it is incorrect to hold him personally responsible for illegal content on the platform and announced that increased moderation will be implemented.
Reports suggest that Telegram has updated its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to reflect this change in stance. Previously, Telegram was favored for its privacy-focused approach, with private chats protected from requests. Now, the platform is starting to take measures against illegal activities.
Following Telegram’s user base reaching 950 million, Durov acknowledged that this growth has made it easier for misuse. He added that steps will be taken to address this issue. The FAQ page has been updated from stating, “All Telegram chats are private among their participants, and we do not process any requests related to them,” to now include instructions for reporting illegal content.
The new statement reads: “All Telegram apps have a ‘Report’ button that lets you flag illegal content for our moderators.” This aims to prevent illegal content such as drugs, explicit material, and other unlawful activities from spreading on the app.
