Epic Games said it rejected Apple’s application because it found the Setup and In-App Purchases labels too similar to those used in the App Store.Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) imposed a series of changes on companies that use market dominance in an anti-competitive manner. Among the companies named is Apple.
Apple rejected Epic Games’ submissions twice!
Apple is required to allow third-party app stores to sell iPhone apps. Epic Games was one of the first companies to announce that it would do so. However, Apple has not yet approved the application, and Epic Games says Apple’s reasons are unnecessary.
“We use the same naming conventions for ‘Installation’ and ‘In-app purchases’ that are used in popular app stores on various platforms, and we follow standard conventions for iOS apps,” Epic Games said in a post on X. “The refusal is arbitrary and contrary to the DMA, so we raised our concerns with the European Commission,” Apple added. The EU is investigating Apple’s possible non-compliance with the law.
The battle between Apple and Epic in the US also continues. A judge ruled that Apple does not have to allow third-party app stores in the US, but it does have to allow in-app sales outside the App Store. Apple said it would then charge a 12 percent commission for small developers and 27 percent for others. Epic Games went back to court, arguing that this was a complete reversal of the judge’s ruling.
In May, the judge strongly hinted that he would likely rule in Epic’s favor, saying he did not believe Apple’s claims that the decision was not financially justified. The following month, he demanded to see all of Apple’s internal documents related to the 27 percent commission decision.
