Apple’s next-generation in-car system is expanding, and new reports indicate that Tesla CarPlay support is officially in development. First unveiled at WWDC 2022, the advanced system known as CarPlay Ultra promised deeper integration with vehicle functions but has seen limited availability. Now, that is set to change as the technology expands to more mainstream brands.
CarPlay Ultra Expands as Tesla CarPlay Support is Developed
A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reveals that Apple’s advanced CarPlay Ultra is expanding its reach. Previously exclusive to luxury automaker Aston Martin, the system is expected to launch in at least one major Hyundai or Kia model in the second half of this year. This expansion signifies a major step toward bringing the next-generation in-car experience to a wider audience.
Furthermore, this development aligns with previous rumors about Hyundai’s upcoming vehicles. Last year, sources suggested that the forthcoming IONIQ 3 electric vehicle would support the new platform. With the vehicle’s official unveiling anticipated in April and a market release later in the year, the timeline reported by Gurman appears consistent.
How Will CarPlay Work in a Tesla?
The Bloomberg report also provides a long-awaited update on Tesla’s plans for CarPlay integration. Gurman confirms that support is actively being developed, with more information expected to be shared “soon.” This confirms earlier reports that the electric vehicle giant was exploring the feature.
However, it is important to note that Tesla does not plan to support the advanced CarPlay Ultra. Instead, the company is working to integrate the standard version of the platform. The implementation will reportedly display CarPlay in a separate window within the existing Tesla software, rather than taking over the entire screen. This means both interfaces will operate simultaneously. Additionally, the report suggests that Tesla plans to offer wireless CarPlay support, providing a seamless connection for iPhone users.
