Tesla cut down 500,000 trees for Germany factory

Ana sayfa / Cars

Tesla’s factory in Germany remains at the center of controversy. The Berlin Gigafactory, which is the production center of the Model Y sent to Turkey, is facing some criticism from climate activists. Tesla allegedly cut down 500 thousand trees to build the factory.

Tesla’s electric vehicle factory near Berlin may have led to the destruction of forested areas. Facing a backlash from climate activists, the Berlin Gigafactory has been heavily criticized for its environmental impact.

Data analytics firm Kayrros estimates that Tesla cut down nearly half a million trees between 2020 and 2023 to make way for the Gigafactory. The analysis revealed that about 813 acres of pine forest were removed from the factory site.

Activists think that the loss of so many trees could create significant carbon emissions. Kayrros calculated that the trees cut down are equivalent to about 13 thousand metric tons of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of about 3,000 gasoline vehicles.

Under German law, Tesla will have to plant an equal number of trees elsewhere. But it will take decades for the newly planted saplings to reach the carbon sequestration ability of the felled trees. Wildlife will also have to move from the factory site.

Tesla plans to increase production capacity at its Gigafactory to 1 million vehicles per year. But earlier this year it came under criticism and the expansion was challenged by climate groups. Tesla revised its plans to cut another 250 acres.
