Tesla expands its robotaxi service

Ana sayfa / News

Tesla is preparing to expand its autonomous passenger transportation efforts to the San Francisco Bay Area. CEO Elon Musk announced that the robotaxi service will be operational in the region within a month or two. However, the launch is dependent on approval from California regulatory authorities.

The pilot program launched in Austin, Texas, last month marked Tesla’s first concrete step in its robotaxi service. The company began testing there with a limited number of vehicles and passengers. For safety reasons, each vehicle is staffed by a supervisor, and the service is limited to specific areas. Musk announced this weekend that the Austin operation will be expanded to a wider area.

Musk confirmed the San Francisco Bay Area expansion plans in response to a question on the social media platform X. He said regulatory approvals for the expansion are pending and that the process could be completed within the next month or two.

Tesla’s autonomous transportation plans are critical to the company’s overall strategy. The slowdown in electric vehicle sales and Musk’s controversial political statements have led the company to shift its focus to AI-enabled technologies.

A significant portion of its multi-trillion-dollar market capitalization is tied to the prospects in this area. Tesla is working not only on robotaxi but also on humanoid robots, and these technologies are expected to play a central role in the company’s long-term future.

Tesla’s biggest competitor in this field is Waymo, part of Alphabet. Waymo currently operates a fleet of approximately 1,500 vehicles in major cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, demonstrating significant market experience and operational advantages over Tesla.

While Tesla faces relatively few legal challenges in Texas, autonomous vehicle regulations in states like California are much stricter. Therefore, the timing and scope of any expansion into the San Francisco Bay Area will depend entirely on the outcome of state-level bureaucratic processes.
