Tesla has announced that it has postponed the launch of its long-awaited Robotaxi by several months. Elon Musk announced three months ago that this innovative vehicle would be unveiled at a special event on August 8, but the launch has now been moved to October. This postponement was made to provide additional time for engineers to perfect the prototype.
Tesla postpones Robotaxi’s debut to October
Tesla’s Robotaxi technology will use multiple cameras that can see 360 degrees around it, ultrasonic sensors and a forward-facing radar. Elon Musk has previously stated that this self-driving taxi will have a “futuristic” design without a steering wheel and pedals. He has also claimed that the Robotaxi service will offer passengers “the lowest cost per kilometer they’ve ever experienced,” which could be even cheaper than subsidized bus or subway tickets.
Musk’s goal of launching the Robotaxi service has been on the agenda for a long time. First floating the idea eight years ago, Musk has recently put this ambitious project ahead of his work to develop an electric car priced even lower than Tesla’s most affordable vehicle, the Model 3. However, Tesla’s launch dates for the Robotaxi project have been postponed before. In 2019, Musk said that autonomous robotaxis would be deployed in 2020, and two years ago he announced that mass production of the vehicle would begin this year, but these goals have not materialized.
Tesla was able to preview the Robotaxi’s features in the Tesla app. Screenshots show that many of the features found in a regular sharing app are also available here. Users can see the vehicle’s progress towards its destination on a map and adjust the Robotaxi’s internal temperature before it arrives.
Ultimately, regulators will decide where and when Tesla can offer its Robotaxi service. Rival companies like Waymo and Cruise have faced major challenges setting up their limited sharing services in several states, and Uber abandoned plans to offer the same type of autonomous service after hitting a pedestrian in Arizona in 2020.
Tesla Robotaxi continues to generate excitement with a new launch date. Drawing attention with the development of technology and innovative features, this service aims to revolutionize the autonomous taxi market with its affordable cost and high performance. The launch, which will take place in October, will allow us to see the results of Tesla’s big technology move.
