Tesla’s controversial autonomous driving feature Autopilot is facing new allegations. It turns out that Tesla, which did not fix the errors in an accident in 2016, caused a different accident in 2019 due to this error. The statements from the company employee seem to put Elon Musk in a difficult situation.
Tesla Autopilot errors noticed in 2016 were not fixed, same accident in 2019
In a lawsuit in the US, Tesla engineers made unexpected statements about an accident in 2016. The Model S, which had a traffic accident with Autopilot on, caused the driver to lose his life.
In 2019, another Model 3 driver crashed with Autopilot. It was stated that this driver also lost his life. The common points of these accidents, which happened three years apart, were the known but unresolved errors of Autopilot.
In a lawsuit over the 2019 crash, the family of the driver who lost his life demanded compensation from Tesla. They claimed that the company knew about the Autopilot defects and made them available without fixing them. “Tesla engaged in willful misconduct by selling a vehicle with an Autopilot system that it knew was defective,” the lawsuit said.
An autonomous driving expert who made statements on the subject stated that Tesla is guilty of Autopilot. He expressed his belief that the company is “guilty of willful misconduct or gross negligence”.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stood behind Autopilot many times, claiming that “Tesla is the safest car”. US agencies are investigating numerous accidents linked to autonomous driving.
