Ubisoft, one of the leading gaming studios, recently underwent a comprehensive restructuring process, leading to a surprising departure at the helm of Assassin’s Creed, one of its most important franchises.
The Assassin’s Creed series is changing
Following the company’s announcement that it would form a new subsidiary with China-based Tencent, it was announced that it would transfer control of the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six franchises to this new subsidiary, Vantage Studios. This internal transformation resulted in the departure of a key figure, Marc-Alexis Côté, who had been at the helm of the series for many years.
Marc-Alexis Côté first joined Ubisoft in 2005, and throughout his career, he served as creative director of major titles such as Assassin’s Creed 3, Syndicate, and Odyssey. In 2022, Côté took over as the helm of the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise, ultimately shaping its direction.
However, according to reports, he had a disagreement with Ubisoft management during the establishment of Vantage Studios. As a result of this disagreement, Côté decided not to be a part of the newly formed subsidiary and left the studio.
Marc-Alexis Côté’s departure from Ubisoft means that creative control and direction of the Assassin’s Creed series will now pass to someone else. While recent games like Shadows and Mirage have achieved financial success, there was a large segment of the gaming community dissatisfied with the series’ direction. Therefore, the news of Côté’s departure is welcomed by some players who had been waiting for a new direction for the series.
