The beloved Need for Speed game is shutting down servers

Electronic Arts is shutting down the multiplayer servers for Need for Speed: Rivals, released in 2013, on October 7, 2025. This will make Rivals the seventh Need for Speed game to have its online support discontinued by EA.

Need for Speed: Rivals was developed in collaboration with Ghost Games (now EA Gothenburg) and Criterion Games. Touted as the 20th main installment in the series, the game was first released in November 2013 on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

While it received positive reviews at the time of release, technical issues encountered at launch dragged down its overall ratings. Despite this, Rivals has long remained one of the most acclaimed Need for Speed games of the 2010s. It was considered a good starting point for players new to the arcade racing genre.

The shutdown, which will take place on October 7, covers all platforms. All players, including PC, PS4, and Xbox One users, will be unable to access online features. The game’s digital store pages have also been updated with a new warning informing them of this.

With this decision, EA has confirmed that the servers for four more games will be shut down in October. NHL 21 will shut down on October 6, one day before Need for Speed: Rivals. Madden 22 will lose online support on October 20, and FIFA 23 will lose online support on October 30.

EA typically announces these types of shutdowns several months in advance. Therefore, any other games that will suffer similar fates in October are expected to be announced by August 2025.
