HBO’s long-developed Harry Potter series has finally hit the set. During its first week of filming, the production team released the first official image from the series. The image shows Dominic McLaughlin, who plays the series’ lead character, Harry Potter, appearing in his Hogwarts costume for the first time. HBO announced in a statement accompanying the image that the series will premiere in 2027.
Harry Potter series coming soon
Like the feature films, the series is based on J.K. Rowling’s original seven-book series. However, this time, each season will focus on only one book. This structure will allow for an in-depth exploration of the books and allow for the series to introduce many details previously unavailable on screen.
The cast of the series’ main characters has also been officially announced. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. The supporting roles include notable actors.
John Lithgow joins the cast as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will portray Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell.
The series is created by Francesca Gardiner, who previously wrote for films such as Succession and His Dark Materials. Mark Mylod, known for his work on The Menu, is directing. HBO’s high-budget and detail-oriented production approach throughout the production process has raised expectations for the series’ quality.
The first image and cast have raised expectations for the series. This new adaptation, faithful to the Harry Potter universe, will premiere in 2027 and will bring the wizarding world to the screen with a more comprehensive narrative, this time in a series format.
