The highest-grossing games have been announced!

The data shared by Sony has revealed a striking picture regarding the distribution of revenues generated on the PlayStation Store. Accordingly; despite more than 12,000 games on the platform, approximately half of the total spending on the PlayStation Store goes to only eight games.

Sony stated that all of these eight games have a “live service” model. Games such as GTA 5, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Roblox, Genshin Impact, NBA 2K, EA Sports FC and EA Sports College Football regularly generate revenue from players through content updates, microtransactions, season pass systems and various virtual item sales.

When these eight games are included along with EA Play and Ubisoft+ subscription services, it is seen that 53 percent of the total spending on the PlayStation Store comes from this limited group. Even excluding subscription fees, the share of these eight games in total revenue approaches 50 percent.

This situation once again reveals how the live service model has become a dominant revenue strategy in the gaming industry. This business model, which has long been criticized by gamers, still stands out as the most profitable option for game companies.

While developers establish a continuous interaction and revenue stream with players thanks to this model, it is becoming increasingly difficult for games based on the traditional one-time purchase model to gain a foothold in the market.
