The US Department of Justice accuses Apple of monopolizing the country’s smartphone market with iPhone. In this context, the tech giant is allegedly killing competition and undercutting rival brands. The Justice Department announced that it has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple.
Apple monopolized the smartphone world with the iPhone
The lawsuit, filed in the US, will address the rules and policies covering the App Store. It will examine whether the company abuses its dominant position in the market and weakens its competitors. The Ministry accuses the company of restricting consumer choice and believes that the company has created addiction to the iPhone and the app store in particular.
Speaking on the issue, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that Apple used certain rules to “stifle innovation” and “stifle competitors”. He said consumers pay higher prices as a result of Apple’s anti-competitive behavior.
Apple, which holds more than 70 percent of the US smartphone market, denied the allegations. It said the lawsuit was factually and legally incorrect. A company spokesperson stated that Apple is working to meet customer expectations. Accordingly, the lawsuit threatens the user experience, he said.
If this antitrust lawsuit is successful, Apple may be forced to loosen some of the tight control on iOS devices. However, the company emphasized that it will vigorously defend itself in court against the allegations.
The European Union had previously taken a similar decision. The EU argued that Apple was depriving users of other, cheaper music streaming apps and, at the end of the day, causing financial harm to iOS users for its own benefit. ,
