Mazda takes a step towards an electric motor for the MX-5
Mazda has confirmed that the new generation MX-5 Miata will be introduced in 2026 and will be “electric.” The Japanese car manufacturer has provided details about the powertrain of the new model. Therefore, there are discussions about whether the vehicle will have a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric motor.
Along with all these claims, Mazda has been increasing its investment in fully electric vehicles lately. Mazda had previously announced partnerships with Rohm Semiconductor for developing electric motors and with Envision AESC for batteries. This is why we might see a fully electric MX-5 in 2026.
However, Mazda faces a significant challenge in this regard. The car has always provided car enthusiasts with a fun driving experience due to its lightweight and balanced weight distribution, rather than powerful engines. It remains a big question how the car will cope with heavy batteries.
Mazda has also managed to dispel the belief that fun cars must be expensive by offering the MX-5 at affordable prices. To maintain its weight at a certain level, the Japanese manufacturer will need to use carbon fiber components, which will significantly increase the car’s cost.
