The filming and release schedule for the new Superman film is beginning to be finalized. Following the box office success of Superman, which premiered in July, director James Gunn quickly began preparing for the sequel.
The new Superman film will be released in 2027.
Gunn confirmed that he has completed the first draft of the script. The director stated that he is working on this approximately 60-page draft and that it will be developed into a full screenplay in the next phase.
Immediately following Gunn’s statements, new information about the project emerged. EmpireCity Box Office, citing information obtained from within Warner Bros., reported that filming on the new Superman film will begin in early 2026. While the studio has not yet announced an official release date, the same source indicates that the film will be released in theaters in summer 2027.
James Gunn made it clear that the new project will not be a direct “Superman 2.” Instead, he stated that they are working on a new film centered around Superman but also featuring other characters from the DC Cinematic Universe. This approach is seen as a step toward establishing a more cohesive universe-expanding structure rather than a traditional sequel.
A similar strategy was employed by Zack Snyder in the past. Instead of a direct sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel, he produced Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. However, James Gunn emphasized that while he may follow a similar path, it won’t follow the exact same formula and that the new film won’t be a “Batman x Superman” production.
Other details about the new film remain unclear for now. However, available information suggests that Superman will continue to play a key role in the reshaping of the DC Cinematic Universe.
