The number of AI and humanoid robots has rapidly increased in recent years, showcasing just how far technology has advanced. These robots are no longer limited to performing simple tasks as they were in the past; they can now possess human-like thinking, learning, and adaptation abilities. In this context, a portrait of Alan Turing, drawn by Ai-Da—one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots—was sold for an astounding amount.
Alan Turing portrait drawn by Ai-Da sold for $1.08 million
A portrait of British mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptologist Alan Turing, drawn by a humanoid robot named Ai-Da, was sold at auction for $1.08 million. This is also considered the first artwork ever created by a robot.
Initially, the portrait of Alan Turing was expected to sell for between $120,000 and $180,000. However, after receiving a total of 27 bids, it quickly surpassed this range and reached a record-breaking sale price.
As expected, Ai-Da can communicate and engage in dialogues using artificial intelligence. Additionally, reports suggest that the humanoid robot created this painting by looking at photos of Alan Turing. So, like many artists, it followed a “see and depict” concept.
The reason for including Alan Turing in the portrait is due to his expression of views on artificial intelligence in the 1950s. Lastly, it’s worth noting that this robot was named after Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, and was developed by art expert Aidan Meller in collaboration with AI experts from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham.
