The number of electric vehicles continues to increase every day. Following electric cars and airplanes, electric ships have now started to be introduced to the market. Incat Tasmania is preparing to launch its ship, which it considers the largest in its class, into the seas very soon.
The largest electric ship sets sail in 2025
The 130-meter-long electric ferry built for the South American maritime company Buquebus will start operating between Argentina and Uruguay from 2025 onwards. The electric ship, named Incat Hull 096, will have a capacity of 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. The ship will also feature a shopping center larger than 2,000 square meters.
The components of the electric ship, built in Australia for use in South America, come from all around the world. The electric motors of the ship will come from the Finnish technology group Wärtsilä, while the 40 MWh capacity batteries will be provided by the Norwegian company Corvus Energy.
Details about Incat Hull 096, which will have 8 electric motors, have not yet been disclosed. Therefore, it is quite difficult to determine the power of the motors to be used on the ship, its maximum speed, and range.
On the other hand, the widespread adoption of electric ships is also expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions. As is known, many cruise and cargo ships emit a considerable amount of carbon, far beyond what cars emit. Large-scale ships can generate more harmful gases in just one voyage than the emissions from thousands of cars in a year.
The proliferation of electric vehicles will also constitute a significant step towards combating environmental pollution.
