A similar feature to Apple’s NameDrop feature, which was introduced with iOS 17 in 2023 and allows sharing files and contact information by bringing two phones close together, is coming to Android phones soon. It has been revealed that Google is also working on a similar feature for Android. The new feature was discovered in a version of Google Play Services under the name “Gesture Exchange.”
NameDrop Coming to Android
Gesture Exchange also includes an activity called Contact Exchange and uses NFC technology to establish a connection. When you launch the feature, the first screen you see allows you to select information such as a photo, phone number, and email address to share. Users can also choose to receive only files and information using the “Receive only” option.
The information sent by the other party can be viewed immediately. This information can be saved with a single touch. Furthermore, important actions such as starting a video call or sending a message can be performed instantly using buttons on the same screen.
While NFC is clearly used, it is likely that this technology was used for the initial handshake between two phones. While the feature currently focuses primarily on sharing contact information, Google has the potential to add file sharing in the future.
