Certain Affinity, the game studio known for its work on popular franchises like Halo and Call of Duty, made an unexpected announcement. Announcing that it laid off about 10 percent of its team, the company made layoffs for the first time in 17 years.
Certain Affinity makes layoffs
In a statement, Certain Affinity CEO Max Hoberman discussed the economic challenges facing the games industry. He cited a slowdown in new project funding from both publishers and third-party investors.
CEO Hoberman said that the studio had to implement layoffs for the first time in its 17-year history. He said that most of the affected employees were in business operations roles. This suggests that the development teams are safe.
This development actually supports the statements of Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. Stating that Xbox is currently unable to grow its player base, Spencer said that investors are cautious about funding new games or studios.
We know that Certain Affinity is currently working with Archetype Entertainment on a sci-fi RPG called Exodus. The company is also developing a first-person shooter codenamed Project Loro.
Rumors earlier this year suggested that the studio was developing a Halo battle royale game. However, both Microsoft and Certain Affinity have not confirmed these claims, leaving the rumors up in the air.
