The gaming world saw dozens of notable releases in 2023. Just last month alone, we saw the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. As successful as these games have been, a horror game released quietly on Steam has toppled the charts.
Slay the Princess surprises with a Metacritic score
A new indie horror game called Slay the Princess has outsold new blockbuster titles from Marvel and Nintendo, according to Metacritic. Accordingly – at least for now – it’s one of the highest rated games of 2023.
Slay the Princess currently has a score of 92 out of 100 on Metacritic. For comparison, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has the same score. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a score of 90, while Alan Wake 2 has a score of 89. According to Metacritic’s ranking, it’s one of the highest rated games of the entire year.
Developed by Black Tabby Games, Slay the Princess was released for Windows on Steam on October 23rd. Despite the lack of a major marketing push or publisher support, the game surprised players with its interesting story and narrative style.
Steam user reviews have also been largely successful. The horror production, which received 3 thousand reviews and 97 percent positive score in a short period of two weeks, is evaluated as “Extremely Positive” on Steam.
In the horror-themed production, players are asked to kill a princess. To do this, they enter a forest hut and take on a disturbing role. However, the princess tries to dissuade players from this task with various persuasions and tricks. The game, which does not have Turkish support, is sold for 175 TL.
