Meta announced today that it has opened APIs for Threads to developers. This will allow developers to publish content, pull their own content and enable response management tools. This will allow users to hide/show or interact with certain replies.
The API will allow third-party developers to create new experiences on Threads
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said that the APIs are widely available and will soon reach more users. Threads engineer Jesse Chen said that with the new API, developers can publish content, pull their own content and deploy response management tools.
They will also have access to analytics metrics at the media and account level, such as views, likes, replies, reposts and mentions.
In October 2023, Instagram president Adam Mosseri first announced that they were working on the Threads API. The company launched the API in closed beta with partners including Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite and Techmeme. At the time, Chen said that the API would be widely available to developers in June, and the company has delivered on that promise.
Along with the release of the new APIs, Meta also released a reference open source application on GitHub for developers to experiment with. The year 2023 was challenging for third-party developers, with social networks like Twitter (now X) and Reddit restricting or shutting down API access.
But decentralized social networks like Mastodon and Bluesky have taken a more developer-friendly approach. Threads has more than 150 million users and its integration with the API gives third-party developers a chance to create great social media experiences.
