Does Tesla lock the vehicle during software update?
TikToker stated that he thought the software update would take 24 minutes according to a message shown on the interior screen of the vehicle, “I entered a job interview while waiting for my food order to be ready, which was waiting during the update. When my job interview was over, the update was continuing and the interior of the vehicle reached a temperature of 115 F (approximately 46 centigrade).”
After 18.3 million views of his first video, TikToker made a new statement and said that it was a bad situation to be locked inside while updating in the car. Janel said in her viral video, “I’m panicking a little, I hope I don’t suffocate. I can’t open the doors or windows, otherwise I could potentially damage my car.”
Tesla’s user manual warns that some safety features are disabled during software updates and that doors or windows should not be opened while installing the update, otherwise “the vehicle may be damaged”.
The guide doesn’t specify what kind of damage, but given that a Model 3 costs $38,990 and a Model X costs $79,990, users have a serious financial incentive not to risk it.
In a video he later posted, Janel said he had owned his Tesla for about 6 years, but decided to make this update while he was inside. Janel and Tesla officials have not yet responded to press inquiries.
