Toyota has teamed up with Huawei to accelerate the development of its driver assistance systems (ADAS) and push for higher levels of autonomy. In addition to Huawei, it announced that it will work with autonomous driving startup Momenta.
Toyota, Huawei and Momenta to develop autonomous driving
The three companies will work to integrate autonomous driving technologies into Toyota’s global product range. Huawei will provide the hardware parts through its ADAS technology, while Momenta will contribute the autonomous driving software. Toyota will oversee the user interface and integration process.
The initial goal of the partnership will be to address driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. In the longer term, it wants to develop systems that can handle full driving without human intervention.
The partnership is expected to be officially announced at the Beijing Motor Show in China later this month. The event is critical for Toyota to showcase its mobility solutions to the Chinese market.
Tesla FSD and BYD stand out in autonomous driving technology. However, partnerships with tech giants such as Huawei and Momenta, which is at the forefront of autonomous software, could help Toyota to stand out in self-driving technologies.
China has formed a consortium called China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP). This consortium will compete more with Toyota.
