Taiwan’s chip giant TSMC increased its investments in the US, sparking concern in the country. TSMC’s strategic importance has also increased, particularly as tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated. Recognizing this, the US is pressuring TSMC to relocate its production facilities to its homeland to protect it from a potential Chinese invasion.
US Puts Pressure on TSMC
While TSMC still conducts the majority of its production in Taiwan, it has established significant facilities in the US. This has sparked outrage among the Taiwanese people. Seeing the company, which has become a symbol of the country, shift to the US, Taiwanese people are worried about their future.
A poll conducted in Taiwan shows that 50 percent of the public fears TSMC becoming “America’s TSMC.” Some experts say this process has already begun. Academics warn that shifting advanced manufacturing and packaging technologies, in particular, to the US will diminish Taiwan’s global strategic importance.
The company’s largest customers include American giants such as Qualcomm, Apple, and Broadcom. This supports the US government’s strategy of bringing high-technology to its homeland and makes TSMC a key player in this process.
However, TSMC still maintains its most critical R&D work and advanced manufacturing processes, such as N2, in Taiwan. This suggests the company is trying to keep its most important technology off the island. What are your thoughts on this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
