TSMC is preparing for the 1.4nm production process

Ana sayfa / News

TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, has launched a new facility for 1.4nm (A14) manufacturing technology. The company is preparing to begin 2nm production in the last quarter of 2025 and is bringing forward the timetable for the next phase, 1.4nm.

According to reports, TSMC will begin construction on its new facility in October. This massive facility, designated “Fab 25” and located in Taichung, Taiwan, will house four manufacturing plants. The initial investment is expected to reach $49 billion. The company is also liaising with its suppliers to ensure the timely procurement of the necessary equipment.

According to the planned schedule, the first trial production of the 1.4nm process will take place at the end of 2027. Full-scale mass production will begin in the second half of 2028. The new technology will deliver a 15 percent increase in performance and a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to the current 2nm process. Three of the four factories will focus on 1.4nm wafer production.

Meanwhile, costs also increase significantly with the new production technology. While the price per wafer for 2nm chips is estimated at $30,000, the estimated cost for 1.4nm (A14) chips is as high as $45,000. TSMC is also reportedly continuing its work on the more advanced 1nm lithography technology.
