With the step, Turkey aims to strengthen its relations with both the East and the West. The new diplomatic move comes in the wake of uncertainties in the European Union accession process and some tensions with NATO member states. Turkey’s continued engagement with Russia, especially in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war, has been applauded.
BRICS membership offers Turkey the opportunity to increase cooperation with economies such as Russia and China and become a trade bridge between Europe and Asia.
For those who do not know, BRICS is positioned as an alternative to organizations such as the World Bank and the IMF. Therefore, membership could provide Turkey with access to alternative sources of financing and broader political and trade relations.
Of course, Turkey’s turn towards BRICS is also an indication that it does not want to completely sever its ties with the West. As Turkey continues its efforts to revitalize accession negotiations with the EU, it seeks to expand its strategic objectives through BRICS membership.
