The 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Prof. Dr. Daron Acemoğlu, Prof. Dr. Simon Johnson, and Prof. Dr. James Robinson. The trio received the award for their groundbreaking research on “How institutions are formed and how they impact prosperity.”

Their research aimed to uncover the extent to which institutions are a factor in a society’s economic performance and overall prosperity. Last year, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Harvard University economist Claudia Goldin for her work on women’s role in the labor force.

Previously, Aziz Sancar won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015, and Orhan Pamuk won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Who is Daron Acemoğlu?

Born in 1967 in Istanbul, Daron Acemoğlu has been a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 1993 and became a full professor of economics in 2000. His research focuses on political economy, economic development, economic growth, income and wage inequality, labor economics, economic theory, and human capital and education.

In 2005, Acemoğlu received the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded to economists under 40 for their contributions to economic thought and knowledge. In 2012, he won the Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize in Economics, and in 2016, he was honored with the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award for his research in economic growth and development.
