Türkiye blocks Discord over privacy concerns

Ana sayfa / Social Media

On October 9th at around 1:00 AM, many users shared that they could not log in to Discord. When we look at Downdetector data, we see that dozens of people have similarly provided feedback because they could not access the application. Afterwards, it was announced that access to Discord was blocked.

After many painful events in Turkey in recent days, it was revealed that there were people who organized for bad purposes on various applications such as Discord and Telegram and harassed many people, especially children.

After this, it was brought to the agenda that platforms such as Discord and Telegram could be closed. However, no steps had been taken in this direction for days and it was announced that no decision had been made yet. However, on October 9, 2024, the decision to block access to Discord was made by the Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace.

Turkish Republic Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said the following regarding the issue:

“Upon the request of Ankara Republic Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace has decided to remove all publications from the content and block access to the specified URL addresses from Turkey due to the sufficient suspicion that the crimes of “child sexual abuse and obscenity” included in Article 8/1 of Law No. 5651 on the Regulation of Publications Made on the Internet and Combating Crimes Committed through These Publications have been committed on the social media platform called Discord.

We are determined to protect our youth and children, the guarantee of our future, from the harmful publications of social media and the internet that constitute crimes. We will never allow attempts to shake the foundations of our social structure.”
