Turn Off 2G! Google Warns Against the Risks of 2G Networks”

Ana sayfa / News

Smartphones, which we all carry in our pockets, are sometimes targeted by malicious individuals. Especially, attacks on older technologies can cast shadows on the security of today’s advanced networks. Google has warned all Android users to disable 2G networks to protect themselves from these threats. So, why is 2G so dangerous, and how can it be disabled? Here are the details…

The 2G network, introduced in the 1990s as a cornerstone of mobile communication, has become obsolete with the advancements in technology, and most of us now use 4G and 5G networks. So why do we still have 2G? In reality, we don’t really need it. As an outdated technology, 2G networks are rife with security vulnerabilities that attract fraudsters.

Google emphasizes that the outdated security protocols of this network provide a clear path for modern fraud tactics. Attackers can set up fake base stations to force phones to connect to 2G networks, spread malware, and send fake bank messages to steal personal information. Such attacks can put users in difficult financial and personal situations. So, how do these fraudsters operate?

Modern smartphones are typically connected to 4G or 5G networks, but they still have the capability to connect to 2G networks. This is where fraudsters come into play. They set up fake base stations that mimic 5G signals, tricking your phone into connecting to a 2G network. They then exploit these vulnerabilities to send fake messages or infect your device with malware.

These attacks occur outside the control of operators and regulators, making them even more dangerous. Google states that this threat is real and that fraudsters can easily acquire fake base station devices for 2G network attacks.

To protect users from this threat, Google suggests disabling 2G networks on Android devices. This is actually quite simple. Follow these steps to disable the 2G network connection:

  1. Go to the Settings menu and open “Network & Internet.”
  2. Manually disable the 2G connection in the SIM card settings.

Most Android devices currently have this feature, but some brands may not offer it yet. Google also plans to introduce a feature with Android 15 for Pixel phones that will provide additional protection against fake base station attacks. This feature will alert users to untrusted connections and keep them informed about potential dangers.

For Apple iPhone users, it’s a bit more complicated. Apple currently does not offer a direct option to disable 2G on iPhones. However, you can restrict 2G connectivity by enabling the “Lockdown Mode.” This mode, however, is not an ideal solution as it limits many functions of your phone. So, there’s no perfect solution available at the moment.
