Elon Musk kept his word and made Twitter’s recommendation algorithm open-source. The recommendation algorithm used by Twitter in the wake of Elon Musk is now available for review here on GitHub. The code, which reveals what the algorithm looks for and how it ranks and filters tweets to determine which tweets appear in the “For You” timeline, includes special tags for Elon Musk and more as part of the “special spotlight”.
Twitter’s recommendation algorithm has three main stages
According to Twitter’s blog post, the recommendation process consists of three main stages. First, the system collects Tweets that it considers “good” on the platform with the help of different recommendation models. Then it ranks these Tweets with a machine-learning model. Finally, it filters out Tweets from people you’ve blocked, Tweets you’ve seen before, or Tweets that are not safe for work (nudity, etc.) before putting them in your timeline.
Meanwhile, those who are not paid Blue subscribers today are losing the blue checkmark they previously received for free. Many celebrities say they will not pay to keep their blue checkmark. The company had previously come to the agenda with its leaked codes. Last week, the news that some of Twitter’s source code was leaked on GitHub made a lot of noise. The company then sent a copyright violation notice to GitHub and demanded that the leaked code be removed. GitHub reportedly complied and removed the code that day. It is unclear exactly how long the leaked code had been online. It is believed that a former Twitter employee is behind the leak.
However, this is not yet certain because the platform had asked the District Court for the Northern District of California to issue a formal order to GitHub to identify the person who leaked the code and the people who downloaded it. That order was officially granted yesterday by the District Court for the Northern District of California. GitHub now needs to help Twitter to identify the people who leaked the source code and the people who downloaded it. It is very likely that the leaker and those who downloaded the code will soon face a serious legal battle.
