After being acquired by Elon Musk last year for $44 billion, Twitter removed its former board of directors. Soon after Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the ousted CEO Jack Dorsey resurfaced with a new platform called Bluesky. However, it seems that the Twitter rival social media platform has been facing troubles lately.
Bluesky is accused of allowing racist usernames
Numerous Bluesky users are highly dissatisfied with the platform’s lack of action against insults, particularly racist remarks targeting black individuals. They hold Bluesky management responsible for allowing most of these offenses to go unpunished and are contemplating leaving the platform.
Last week, the platform came under criticism for a controversial update that removed many racist, ableist, and transphobic slurs from the list of flagged words. However, following the ensuing backlash, a new update on the platform addressed the issue.
Although the subsequent update on Bluesky removed many banned words from usage, it was discovered that this change only applied to new users. Existing Bluesky users seemed unaffected, as an old user was able to change their account name to a term containing offensive language after the latest update.
In response to this development, many users tagged the account and questioned Bluesky about the issue. Users who are troubled by these developments are threatening to abandon the platform in protest against the company’s flawed policies. Additionally, numerous users have halted their sharing on the platform until racist and offensive language, as well as account names, are removed.
While Bluesky initially garnered attention as Twitter’s rival due to its rapid success, it appears that it may lose a significant number of users due to its inability to prevent racist speech. The lack of an apology from the platform further fuels criticism. What are your thoughts on Bluesky allowing racist usernames? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments section.”
