Ubisoft is going through a rough patch over alleged violations of user data privacy. The company is accused of sharing user data with Meta through an analytics tool used on its website and digital store.
Ubisoft accused of sharing user data with Meta
Ubisoft is facing a lawsuit accusing it of sharing user data with Meta. The lawsuit claims that Ubisoft’s use of Meta’s Pixel analytics tool on its website and Ubisoft Store violates privacy laws.
Pixel is a service that tracks actions on websites and helps companies understand marketing effectiveness. But the lawsuit states that by using Pixel, Ubisoft disclosed customers’ personally identifiable information to any technical expert who accessed the data.
The lawsuit was filed by users who made purchases from the Ubisoft Store. Accordingly, customers are demanding compensation, claiming that their data was shared without permission. If the case is upheld, thousands of Ubisoft customers across the US may have to be paid.
This development is critical for Ubisoft, which is already having a hard time. The postponement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and lower than expected sales of productions such as Star Wars Outlaws have negatively affected the stock. Accordingly, there are also reportedly talks for a potential takeover by Tencent.
Ubisoft declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. However, the company has stated that it will make a full return to Steam and continue its efforts to strengthen its top brands.
