The ongoing crisis between Ukraine and Russia continues to show its effects. The scale of the war is increasing with mutual attacks from both sides. While military power is the primary factor determining the outcome of this war, the technological capabilities of the armed forces also play a significant role. On the night of May 28, 2023, Ukraine shot down a total of 52 UAVs belonging to Russia. Here are the details…
Ukraine repelled the attack and brought down 52 UAVs!
As it is known, Russia requested support for its land and air forces from the beginning of the crisis with Ukraine. In this context, Iran added kamikaze UAVs to its inventory, locally known as HESA Shahed-136/131 and globally as Shaded-136 and Shaded-131.
However, Ukraine did not stand idly by while the enemy was strengthening. They supported their air force with air defense systems in addition to UAVs. In this regard, Ukraine took measures to secure itself against airborne attacks.
Yesterday, official statements were made through Ukraine’s official Telegram accounts regarding the attack. They stated that Russia attempted to attack Ukraine using the Iranian-made Shaded-136 and Shaded-131 UAVs they acquired from Iran.
They mentioned that Ukraine resisted against Russia’s attack conducted with a total of 54 UAVs and repelled the attack by bringing down 52 of these UAVs. In a statement by the Ukrainian Air Force, they said, “On the night of May 28, 2023, the enemy attacked Ukraine from the north – Bryansk region, and the south – Krasnodar region, using the Iranian attack aircraft Shahed-136 and Shahed-131. A record number of kamikaze UAV attacks, totaling 54, were observed.”
In the rest of the statement, Ukraine’s defense forces reported that they successfully repelled the attack as a united force and brought down “52 Shahid Kamikaze UAVs” during the successful battle.
In previous months, similar incidents were observed where the same UAV model exploded within Ukraine’s borders. Experts have doubts about the capabilities of the Iranian-made Shaded UAV models following all these incidents. It is believed that the model is vulnerable to next-generation warfare systems. However, it is also said that the piloting and directing teams may be responsible for bringing down the 52 UAVs.
