Russia’s invasion last year not only forced Ukraine to rethink its defense strategy, but also revealed the country’s technological capabilities. Accordingly, Ukraine is undergoing an incredible transformation in drone production.
Ukraine is on its way to becoming a drone giant in the shadow of war
Ukraine has greatly increased its domestic drone production capacity since the Russian invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced to foreign arms manufacturers that Ukraine is now capable of producing four million drones a year. This represents a massive growth in drone production, which barely existed before the war.
Zelenski noted that 1.5 million drones were ordered in the first three quarters of 2024 alone. This figure has already exceeded the target of one million drones set for the year. Noting that Ukraine is developing an almost new defense industry, the President expects production volumes to continue to increase.
This transformation is quite remarkable for the country. Before the invasion, Ukraine’s defense industry was considered quite weak. But in response to continued Russian aggression, domestic weapons production tripled in 2023 and doubled in the first eight months of 2024.
Ukraine aims to become a leader in this technology, at least within Europe. The mass production capacity of 4 million drones per year will position Ukraine as a major global supplier. It will also provide a major boost to the country’s defense.
Ukraine said it will continue to rapidly develop its defense industry in wartime conditions. It will also continue to cooperate with international partners to realize its ambitious goals.
