Samsung Electronics has signed an important agreement with artificial intelligence company Preferred Networks. The two companies will produce next-generation artificial intelligence chips using Samsung’s 2nm process technology.
Samsung will produce 2nm artificial intelligence chips
Preferred Networks was a customer of TSMC some time ago. This shows that the deal is a big win for Samsung. The AI company’s decision to switch from TSMC to Samsung came as a surprise to the semiconductor industry.
The details of why PFN chose Samsung are unclear. However, industry observers think that Samsung may have offered a better price to produce the new 2nm AI chips. This also suggests that Samsung wants to rival TSMC’s current manufacturing leadership.
Under the agreement, Samsung will manufacture PFN’s first 2nm AI chips using the 2nd generation Gate-All-Around architecture. The 2nm manufacturing process promises significantly improved performance and power efficiency compared to the 3nm architecture that Samsung is currently mass producing.
The deal will also give Samsung experience and learning in producing the 2nm design. It could also open the door for the company to win more AI customers if it can meet its 2nm performance targets.
Analysts said Samsung wants to apply 2nm technology to mobile processors in the near future. With flagship chips currently adopting 3nm, this would be an important milestone.
