Artificial intelligence is now everywhere in our lives. Humanity is transitioning to the digital universe with the development of technology. Artificial intelligence is the rising star of our age. Of course, it has risks as well as benefits. The United Nations has also made the world aware of the potential of artificial intelligence. He has undertaken an effort to help manage the risks of this situation. Here are the details…
The United Nations is preparing to take steps for artificial intelligence!
UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that they want to further harness the power of technology through international cooperation and governance. He also recognizes the potential of artificial intelligence. Therefore, they want to leverage such technology for good and reduce their risks. For this, the United Nations will create a special artificial intelligence advisory body with broad powers.
Guterres pointed to numerous benefits, from health and education to the digitalization of emerging economies. “Artificial intelligence can power extraordinary progress for humanity. It can also strengthen climate action and efforts to achieve the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” he added.
But Guterres warned that AI expertise is currently concentrated in a handful of companies and countries. Unfortunately, this may increase global inequalities. Thus, the spread of disinformation and prejudice cannot be prevented. Additionally, this may enable surveillance and invasion of privacy. This can lead to violations of human rights in general.
The Secretary General said, “Without going into a series of doomsday scenarios, it is already clear that the malicious use of artificial intelligence can undermine trust in institutions, undermine social cohesion and threaten democracy itself. For all these reasons, it is necessary to maximize the benefits of artificial intelligence to all humanity and to reduce the risks it entails.” I called for a global, multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder conversation on governance to reduce said.
These recommendations will be used in the preparation of the UN’s Next Summit in 2024. In particular, these recommendations will form part of the Global Digital Compact. This initiative will outline common principles for an open, free and secure digital future for all humanity.
