The latest information from the HDMI Forum reveals the introduction date of the next generation HDMI 2.2 standard. So when is HDMI 2.2 coming?
HDMI 2.2 will be introduced at CES 2025
The HDMI 2.1 standard, which is currently in general use all over the world, was introduced to all users at CES 2017 in January 2017. About 8 years after the introduction of the 2.1 standard, information from the HDMI Forum shows that the new HDMI standard will appear at CES 2025. The new HDMI standard at CES 2025 is expected to be used in Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards and AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 series graphics cards. It is known that these new cards will have DisplayPort 2.1 support.
The existing HDMI 2.1 connection standard supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth. This bandwidth standard is available to users in current mid-range graphics cards. The 2.1 standard currently supports 120 Hz image transmission at 10240×4320 pixels at the highest. The bandwidth expected to increase in the upcoming HDMI 2.2 may allow higher screen refresh rates with HDMI. The latest DisplayPort 2.1 standard offers up to 80 Gbps bandwidth, and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 and AMD Radeon RX 8000 series are expected to come with this standard. However, new information from the HDMI Forum’s CES 2025 PR team indicates that the existing HDMI standard will be updated.
The HDMI Forum team said the new features, including next-generation HDMI technology and increased bandwidth, will support a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates enabled by a new HDMI cable. It is expected to share the features of the new HDMI 2.2 standard one day before the promotion day. The HDMI 2.2 standard will be introduced at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025, which will start on 7 January 2025.
