The United States is strengthening the military’s connection with technology with advances in artificial intelligence. Finally, senior executives from leading Silicon Valley technology companies have joined the US army as officers. Four people working at Palantir, Meta and OpenAI have been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the US army.
The US has given Meta and OpenAI executives the rank of lieutenant colonel
The US army announced that Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, OpenAI Product Director Kevin Weil and OpenAI R&D Director Bob McGrew have been given the rank of lieutenant colonel.
These four people will play an active role in the US army’s transition to next-generation technologies. Without receiving any military training or taking on a field duty, the executives become part of the US army by attending an official oath ceremony.
It is known that in the past, civilians have been given honorary titles or assigned to advisory positions by the army. However, this time the ranks given are not symbolic. Although managers are not expected to take on an actual role within the military, their ranks and positions are officially valid.
Relations between Silicon Valley and the Pentagon have deepened in recent years. As the impact of artificial intelligence on war technologies, defense systems and intelligence activities increases, the boundaries between the private sector and the military structure are becoming more permeable.
China’s intensive use of technology in the military field, in particular, is causing the US to accelerate its strategic steps in this area. So what do you think about this issue? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
