A groundbreaking development has just shaken the electric vehicle world. Verge Motorcycles has officially launched the world’s first solid-state battery motorcycle, a technology poised to eliminate the biggest hurdles for electric bikes: range anxiety and long charging times.
What Does Solid-State Battery Motorcycle Tech Offer?
Developed in partnership with Donut Lab, Verge’s solid-state battery technology offers a significantly safer and more efficient alternative to current lithium-ion cells. By using a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid or gel, these batteries are set to fundamentally change the riding experience. The primary advantages of this technology are remarkable:
- Ultra-Fast Charging: Gain an additional 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range with just a 10-minute charge.
- Extended Range: The standard model provides a 350 km (217 miles) range, but an optional package boosts this to an impressive 600 kilometers (370 miles) on a single charge.
- Superior Safety: Unlike traditional batteries, solid-state cells do not carry a risk of catching fire, making them much safer for both riders and charging stations.
- Long Lifespan: These next-generation batteries are designed to last the entire lifetime of the motorcycle.
Furthermore, this innovative battery pack does not increase the price of the Verge TS Pro model, making it a highly cost-effective option for customers.
A First in the Automotive Industry: Verge Leads the Way
While solid-state batteries have been a hot topic in the automotive industry for years, Verge stands out as the first brand to bring this technology to mass production. The company’s CEO, Tuomo Lehtimäki, describes this development as a “historic breakthrough that will shake the entire automotive industry.” Lehtimäki added, “Our development and testing work with Donut Lab has reached a point where we can integrate this technology into the already-in-production Verge TS Pro model.”
The Verge TS Pro is impressive beyond its battery. Known for its hubless in-wheel motor, the model produces 1000 Nm of torque and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. This technology holds immense potential not just for motorcycles, but for a wide range of future vehicles, from cars to trucks.
